Odd as it seems, I thought I recognized this from an Australian nature/photography blog I follow. It seems to be Hibbertia scandens: an Aussie endemic.
That is not so odd. It was more popular and even common in the 1980s and 1990s. I do not know why it became uncommon. Its slightly unpleasant foliar aroma may be a deterrent to its continued popularity. It is supposed to smell lemone, but really smells sort of like a litterbox.
Hibbertia scandens. The flowers really do look just like Hypericum flowers, but on a vine that can suspend them several feet up. It looks weird to see what seems to be a Saint John’s wort flower hanging from a six foot tall fence.
Beautiful, but what is it? Proper name please. The flowers look like hypericum but can’t be if it is a vine.

It is pretty up close, but the bloom is not so profuse this year. I did not plan on growing this, but I am pleased that it is here now.

I had one on a fence a long time ago when I had a garden, but it got very rampant

It got big enough to get rampant?! Goodness, I think of this as a relatively small and complaisant vine. How high did it climb?

I kept trimming it back to fence hight

Well, unless the fence was very tall, the vine probably was not too humongous. I do not mind if it stays less than twenty feet high.

The fence was about 6 feet.

Okay, that is no problem for me.
