This will very soon be a rather significant construction project at work.

1. These plans do not represent the scale of this project well. The Auditorium Terrace is already present, but is in need of renovation. The Overlook Deck will be completely new.

2. In the process of renovation, four disfigured and deteriorating London plane trees will be replaced with specially grown high-branched red maples for the Auditorium Terrace.

3. Orange mesh designates where the new Overlook Deck will be. The top of the mesh is at the same level of the deck. The wire is where the rail will be. It is higher than it looks.

4. Stumps of the many trees that were cut down for this project are trying to regenerate, and will likely continue to do so for many years. Tanoak and bay trees do not die easily.

5. Our only palm here, a windmill palm, will be displaced by the project. Fortunately, we planned ahead, and nested it into the ground still within its big tub, rather than plant it.

6. Strangely, what we thought were three alders are now blooming with prominent white flowers. They are some sort of dogwood. They were in too much shade to bloom before.

    1. I am pleased that they are even available. I thought that we would need to plant common red maples, and then prune them up for clearance above the monitors at the front of the terrace.

    1. Yes, we thought that they were alders, which are rather boring. I am pleased that they are dogwoods, and that they will likely bloom now that the forest there has been thinned out to allow a bit more sunlight through.

  1. Thanks for sharing the progress and the plans for this amazing project. Do keep us posted throughout the process, as it’s fascinating to see the stages along the way to the finished project. Nice that you have some flowering Dogwoods on the property!

    1. I believe that they are the native Cornus nuttallii, but they could have been planted. Their canopies are so high up that I can not get a good look at them. I know of no other wild dogwoods in the area. (Some are planted in the landscapes).

    1. We will not be doing the construction, but I am confident that it will go well. Although I dislike new ‘improvements’ at such an old site, this particular spot was in need of some renovation.
