Punctuality is an attribute that is not endowed equally. Some plant species march to the beat of a different drum.

1. Lagerstroemia indica, crape myrtle is ready for autumn with its foliar color. However, the weather has not gotten cool yet. This may be the result of distress through summer.

2. Clerodendrum myricoides, butterfly flower supposedly begins to bloom in June, and then finishes about now. However, this tardy specimen is only beginning to bloom now.

3. Camellia sasanqua, sasanqua camellia should bloom for autumn or winter. However, this specimen blooms whenever it wants to. It seems to be at a different time every year.

4. Hebe buxifolia, boxwood hebe should have bloomed for June or July. However, it did nothing at the time. Instead, it is blooming now. I believe that this one is ‘Patty’s Purple’.

5. Crinum bulbispermum, Orange River lily bloomed on time for spring, but is doing so again. However, it can bloom randomly any time, so is technically neither early nor late.

6. Rhody says that it is never too early or too late for a nap. He is an expert on that topic. He also mentioned that it is bad grammar to use “however” in each of these six citations.

    1. I am not familiar with it either. It just grew where something else died. I suspect that its seed came with the other plant from the nursery. I do not know how tall it grows. It is only about six feet tall now.

    1. Hebes are resilient. That is probably why ours have survived in their garden after it was abandoned. Otherwise, I find them to be boring, probably because they are so common here.

  1. When I lived in southern California, my husband, a midwest transplant complained that he could not remember when things happened, because there were no obvious seasons. Meybe your plants are feeling the same way – what does it matter when I bloom? Tomorrow is another sunny day! My plants will take forever to emerge, so they are not killed by a late frost, and bloom when they can. Daisy fleabane seems to never quit, so it has earned a little respect. Everything else, besides the asters is getting ready for winter. Leaves are changing color, the Ostrich fern is putting on the dark “fertile fronds” that provide winter interest, and the seeds are ripening for the birds. it is a good time of year, even though I will miss all my garden friends as they hibernate or leave it for the next generation, as the case may be. The butterfly flower is great!

    1. A few species bloom for much of the year because they are opportunistic like that. They bloom as long as the weather is warm. Many, though, should be in tune with their seasons. They know when the days are getting shorter.
